Sensei Joe Muscato achieves Nidan November 3, 2002 Sensei Muscato passed the requirements for Nidan in Karate. The requirements include a written test, complete review of requirements to Shodan, two new kata, one empty hand, one weapon. Also included are combat skills with a bo (bo-bo kumite), bo defense against sword blindfold defense and combative strategy. The minimum required time before Nidan test is one year from Shodan.

Renee' Morris and Richard Ryan pass for 1st Degree Black Belt August 18, 2002 It was another 85+ degree August day. Both candidates demonstrated their ability to perform under pressure and stamina under very unfavorable conditions. Renee' Morris, age 20, daughter of Master Ron Strain, 4th Degree, has been studying the art since 1996. She demonstrated excellent self defense, unfazed by attackers, some twice her size. She is proudly accepted in the ranks of the growing number of women practitioners of Tatsu Do. Richard Ryan, age 33, is a law enforcement officer, augmenting his capability with martial arts. He has been studying at the Hombu under the primary instruction of Master Sahrle, 5th Dan. He indeed has demonstrated he's achieved the ability to defend himself and control his opponents. Tatsu Do Yudanshakai (family) welcomes these two new members.
Emil Markulis Promoted to Shodan - 1st Degree Black Belt June 9, 2002 Mr. Emil Markulis (age 18) has passed his 1st Degree Black Belt Test today. Sensei Markulis is a student of Sensei Lea Bancroft, Nidan, from Geneseo Dojo, also instructed by Sensei Beard and Sensei Krein. The test was given by Hanshi William R. Cavalier, Jr. in front of the Tatsu Do Yudanshakai Board and nearly twenty other Black Belts. Sensei Markulis demonstrated excellent knowledge of the art and was passed by all of the attending Black Belts.

Brian Kabala and Emily Milgate Promoted to Shodan - 1st Degree Black Belt May 19, 2002 Today, Brian Kabala (age 13) and Emily Milgate (age 14) passed their test for Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt). They each had to demonstrate proficiency in empty hand kata, weapon kata, various Karate, jujutsu and aikijutsu techniques and all of their knowledge applied to self defense against single and multiple attackers. Further, they were tested on defenses against club, knife, chain and gun. They both showed excellent composure under pressure and excellent technique. Both showed exceptionally accomplished kicking technique and form. They study at the Caledonia Sunrise Dojo under Kyoshi Roztocil. They are the first junior shodans in Tatsu Do. Congratulations !

Shihan Parker and Shihan Hillman passed Sandan Test in Aiki Jutsu May 5, 2002
Both Shihan Parker and Shihan Hillman have formally studied Aiki Jutsu under Hanshi Cavalier since 1980. Aiki Jutsu is a very demanding and sometimes dangerous art and that is the main reason why there are very few high dans in the art. Both candidates demonstrated high level of proficiency and passed the test, which includes review all technique up to Sandan, advanced defenses against weapons, blindfolded defenses, use of jo and yawara, complete knowledge of techniques from the Tatsu Do large Aiki manual, advanced counters, free style aiki sparring and multiple attacker defenses.
The test was given by Kyoshi Roztocil and was witnessed by Renshi Bray (Godan/Aiki), Master LaDouce (Yodan/Aiki) and Hanshi Cavalier.

Robert Hursey promoted to Sandan in Karate May 5, 2002
Robert Hursey was promoted on May 5th, 2002. His test included several empty hand and weapon kata, defense against katana with traditional okinawan weapons and advanced kobudo handling of all weapons. Tatsu Do Sandan test also includes basic iai draws and beginning kata, which Sensei Hursey performed especially well. The final portion of the test includes blinfolded defenses and combative strategy against single and multiple attackers. Sensei Hursey studies under Shihan Hartness and also trains with Kyoshi Roztocil.
Steven Sydorowicz promoted to Nidan April 7, 2002 Today, Steven Sydorowicz completed his testing for Nidan in Karate. A student of Kyoshi Roztocil, Sunrise Dojo in Caledonia, he has achieved his Shodan in June of 1999. The Tatsu Do nidan test involves performance of additional empty hand and weapon forms, blindfold defenses, combative strategy and bo-bo combat. In addition, the candidate is required to undertake a written test comprising of various elements of Tatsu Do karate.
Renshi Holly Nightendale-Skrobinski achieves Godan
March 24, 2002 Renshi Holly Nightengale-Skrobinski achieved her Godan (Black Belt-5th Degree) on March 24, 2002. She has held a black belt rank since June 5, 1990, when she passed for her Shodan. She is the second female Senior Master in Tatsu Do system and also holds a Sandan in Tatsu Do Iai Jutsu. (see Iai Ranking in February 2002).

Iai Testing on February 9th 2002 Hanshi Cavalier conducted testing of the Iai class students. Kyoshi Roztocil and Shihan Hillman witnessed the testing. The following promotions were awarded:
Master LaDouce Promoted to Yodan in Aiki Jutsu
Mark LaDouce has been studying Aiki Jutsu for 21 years. A working level yodan is a rare occurrence in Aiki due to very time in grade requirements between ranks. He has achieved yodan on Feb. 28th 2002. He is one of only three dans at this level in Tatsu Do, besides Hanshi Cavalier. Renshi Bray, godan, is responsible for Aiki classes at the Hombu every Thursday at 7 pm.
